AN ARTIST STATEMENT BY PATRICIA PRIETO-BLANCO
A Chicken. Chicken skin overtaking the world. We are all becoming chickens as we live to produce, consume, produce, consume … The idea of using a dead chicken as a metaphor of our decay and corruption had been in my mind for a while. Now, it seemed I had found a visual way of expressing it. The chicken skin woman, my alter ego. She emerged as the medium.
Consumer: An organism that derives the organic compounds it needs from the consumption of other organisms. (Oxford English Dictionary, 2011).
To devour, to waste, to destroy, to use up, a commodity, a purchaser. Irrational waste of resources (monetary and otherwise) and continuous self annihilation through the soma process of goods and service acquisition by chicken-head-driven human-beings.
A chicken skin woman. She is watching the sunset but the chicken on her face won’t let her. She is an honest professional who is starting to get caught up in the midst of rules and conventions. She has lost her vision and soon the chicken skin will take over the rest of her senses. Her life is an entanglement of places, distances, affections and passivity. The start and the end of the thread is long lost and with it the chicken skin woman grows old: she becomes a dreamless pragmatic worker. And she exercises the only right she feels she has left: the right to consume (herself). And she hates every minute of it.
She is trapped and she knows it. Slowly she begins to take ownership of her cage. She starts finding pride in polishing the bars. Moisturizing surely doesn’t hurt anyone, does it? Also, she is determined to find others like her. There must be somebody else who feels the struggle of the skin. A journey within the journey. The process and the path. No outcome. The sense of futility is still overwhelming.
Be part of the Chicken Story by collaborating with adventurous people. We will all perform our own versions of female chicken-skin gender. Everyone involved will receive a print of the shoot. Over the next few months I plan to shoot in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Lisbon, Antwerp and Madrid.
